Choosing Corrugated or Flat Wall Furnace Muffles

Selecting new furnace muffles can sometimes land you in the hot seat. You need a solution that will last; one tailored to your specific requirements while delivering the quality and cost-effectiveness you seek. Not an easy task.

Corrugated or Flat-Wall?

Specifying a new furnace or repairing one already in service requires a lot of decisions, large and small, but deciding whether to go with corrugated or smooth-wall muffles is fundamental.

What’s the Difference?

A corrugated muffle makes sense when you’re trying to reduce weight. Corrugation enables us to offer a thinner product with the same level of support a thicker flat product would provide. Lighter weight means lower mass, which translates into improved energy transfer. Corrugation also increases the muffle’s surface area, thus enabling it to radiate more heat, potentially promoting increased fuel savings.

In terms of performance, corrugated material provides higher bending resistance than flat plate and in the face of continuous heat cycling offers better material stability. It also generates a more turbulent flow than flat products.

Corrugated muffles carry higher labor costs than flat plate given the extra processing they require and the higher cost of materials since more material is needed to yield the net result. Because of its more complex fabrication, corrugated furnace muffles can require longer lead times.

While flat wall muffles may be less expensive, they will consume more energy while in service, and require replacement at a much faster rate.
